It's a New Year!

Agghhh! So I'm so excited I can barely contain all of my thoughts right now!


For some reason, I am really just super stoked about this new year, and all the new changes I get to make. Not that I couldn't have made changes before, but what a great excuse to force myself to get started! I think it all started this morning when I got my hair cut. In high school I had a really edgy, short haircut that basically rocked; however, when I went to college I just never found any hairstylist capable of re-creating that masterpiece. Fortunately, I came home just in time to see good ole Penny-the-Great, and got another, different kick-ass haircut. Now I'm just on a roll about making changes and becoming a super-person!

One thing I'm definitely going to commit myself to this semester is getting in shape. I have very little restraint and will-power, so most of my attempts at diet and exercise generally fizzle out by the time I either get bored or think I have better ways to spend my time. This time is legit though. I found this super cool (free) website (www.sparkpeople.com), which helps you to track your diet, exercise, and progress, and helps you along the way with things like meal plans, workouts, and other features to make sure you succeed. They also have a separate website that has all sorts of healthy, low budget recipes (heaven!). I signed up today, and I'm all about taking advantage of both the online version, and the iPhone app. Completely THRILLED! ALSO, I'm a member of the YMCA in Bethlehem, and I'm really excited about taking advantage of all of the workout classes this semester. Hello, zumba, cardio core, cardio boot camp, 15/15/15, and kettle bells! I've already programmed them into my Google Calendar. Dorky? Perhaps. But, if those kids on "I Used to Be Fat" can do it, I can too. ;)

Oh, and did you hear me mention "iPhone app" in that last paragraph? Yep, that's right. I've graduated to iPhone status. This promotion could not have been possible without my brother Dustin's generous donation of his 2 year old iPhone 3g to the Beth fund. Ahh... You thought I won the lottery? Nope. Still poor. But happy, nonetheless! I am responsible for paying for the additional monthly fees for the magical (yet slower-than-iPhone4) contraption, but I think it's worth it. I've already downloaded tons of awesome, useful apps (free, of course). It feels like Christmas all over again when I click that "install" button.

Ahh, what else?! I feel like there's so much to say and it's all bouncing around in my head. Yes, so Mary Kay. I signed my agreement to be a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant in August, and I've been learning and working for the past few months to build my business. At first it was slow, but I am really encouraged by the start of 2011. I had a party on January 3rd at my Aunt Joan's house, and sold over $560 worth of product! I've already completed the January challenge, and will be getting a nice ring at the end of the month! :) I just need to keep this up, and I'll be golden.

Can You Hear Me Now?

Headphones might have been one of man's greatest inventions... It's a pretty big thing to think that everyone can privately listen to whatever they please without regard for those around them. I use headphones, or more specifically, earphones, all the time for things like keeping myself entertained at work or in the fitness center. Heck, I even bought a new pair this weekend after I realized that Apple doesn't make earphones for iPods that accommodate my ear shape.


One thing about headphones that I don't like, however, is when people use them as a social cop-out. There's this girl at Lehigh that wears her headphones all over campus, along with her too-cool-for-school sunglasses and her backpack. She is obviously listening to her iPod, but refuses to acknowledge you when you wave hello or ask her how she's doing because she "can't hear you..." Give me a break. Perhaps you can't "hear" me, but you don't need to "hear" my incessant waving, you obviously see me. Stop being a douche and walk around like other normal, social beings OR add a dark, hooded jacket (with the hood up) to your ensemble and make it very clear to everyone that you are not into interaction.

Yeah, so headphones are good. Headphones in public, social situations, are not good.

Dress Code

So the theme of the day seemed to be "what not to wear." Now, I'm no fashion expert... In fact, I'm surprised I haven't been nominated for the show What Not to Wear, based on my old, worn- in clothes I've been sporting since high school (with a few added items from my college days). However, I usually know when something just doesn't look good, and, surprisingly, this is not something everyone can see.


I was sitting next to my grandmother at my little sister's high school graduation two weeks ago. As room filled with small-town folks from the Vieve, my grandma kept commenting, "Gosh, Beth, there's just no style these days," and as more people passed our spot on the gymnasium bleachers, "Damn, it looks like anything goes.." Well, Grandma, that's only in Missouri... err, more specifically, Ste. Genevieve.

Today, an intern proved me wrong. I don't know where she was from, but she was infesting North Carolina with abysmal clothing choices and accessory combinations. Another fellow intern, who shall be named "Birdie," can back me up on this one. I don't want to describe it directly, lest the offender might read this; however, I would be happy to describe the abomination in person.

In any case, I got to thinking about some of the poor fashion choices I've made, and remembered one particular sweater that my best friend Jenna and I purchased in bright blue (Jenna's) and bright magenta (mine, of course).

Imagine the above sweater, but in one of those colors and with two ribbon ties in the front instead of the wrap effect... bad. No one, not even an Arctic dweller, needs that much faux fur.

I'm sure there were many more poor fashion decisions that I made and can't remember right now. And, I'm sure you have your own as well. If you think of one, post it! I love stories...

So, today's lesson: A mirror check before you leave does wonders...

p.s. I'm still up for being nominated for What Not to Wear... A $5,000 shopping spree sounds glorious right about now!

Inside Out

My apartment has terrible cell phone reception. Every time I get a call I have to run out onto the porch to hear anything...


Today my porch excursion lasted a bit longer than I anticipated. My brother called, so, naturally, I ran to the door, unlocked it and headed outside. I was sitting on a chair on the porch, and it was raining. It was a bit chilly and I wanted to go inside, but knew I wouldn't have a clear signal. So, I sat in the cold, chatting away with a bit of rain spraying on me. Frank, my roommate for the summer, poked his head outside after I had been on the phone for about 40 minutes. He said "Hey, I'm going to Wal-Mart, do you need anything?" I replied that I didn't, and he headed out. My phone conversation continued, and I realized that I needed to pee. I had guzzled two huge glasses of water only moments before my brother called. My brother and I got off the phone a few minutes later, and I headed back into the apartment...

The door was locked.

Frank must have locked it when he left for Wal-Mart. I checked again. Yep, it was locked. So, I went to Frank's sliding door. Also locked. So I ventured out in the yard in the rain and went around the building to the front door. Also locked. By this time I had to pee pretty bad, and the sound of rain and the cold weren't helping. I considered popping a squat in the bushes but thought better of it. I don't need any citations for public indecency. So, I went back to the porch and decided to keep myself busy. I found out that we have a string of lights that go around the top of the porch. I tested them. Very nice. I also remembered that we have a TV on the porch. Bobby Flay was challenging this guy from New York that makes really good hotdogs on Food TV. It made me want a hotdog real bad. It also made me temporarily forget about having to pee.

So, after almost an hour of sitting outside, Frank returned. He was very apologetic. I finally was able to relieve myself.

We decided to hide a key to avoid future issues. Good idea? Absolutely.

Nightmare

Last night I had the first nightmare in who knows how long... It was the most bizarre experience.

In the dream I had this pet. It was like a cat, but different. And it changed in the dream. It was like it became rabid. Anyway, I as sitting near this window and the cat was stretched out with its bottom legs standing on my thighs and its front paws on the base of the window. In the dream I knew that something weird was happening to the cat. Then, the cat calmly came down like it was going to sit on my lap... And, all of a sudden it turned around, and started clawing my face off. I didn't scream... I just sat there in shock. I didn't even try to throw it off of me.

I woke up sweating profusely, shaking, with my knees bent, and gasping for air.

Isn't it weird how we have so many nightmares when we are young, and then they sort of go away when we get older. I'm having my sister look up my dream in her dream interpreter book. We'll see what she says.

My First Post!

Hello, and welcome to my new blog!


I have been itching to start a blog this summer, and, considering it was the most productive day post-finals at Lehigh, today seemed to be the right time to do it.

So, my thoughts for this blog... It is going to be a collection of my thoughts. Haha... I haven't decided if I should have a theme, so it's going to be an experiment. I have a new job, I'm living in a new place, and I'm all about trying new things this summer, so I'm sure I will have some entertaining things to write about.
